Family need justice after Espérance YANKULIJE was shot and killed by Rwandan National Police

Mother of a 5 month old baby, 19 years old, Espérance YANKULIJE was shot and killed by Rwandan National Police in Ngera sector of Nyaruguru district on 6th February 2023.

Witnesses told rwandauntoldstory.org that the trigger was the “bribe” that the local authorities asked the seller of classic beers. Not appreciating the amount of money received, they called the police and invented an accusation against the seller of selling a forbidden alcoholic drink.

Policemen wanted to take the seller and his sister away, the population did not appreciate this practice and became agitated. The police fired twice, killing Esperance Yankulije and injuring another person.

The vendor’s mother explained that the local authorities came to ask her for 10,000 Rwf when a few days before she had given them the same amount.

Southern Province police spokesman CIP Emmanuel Habiyaremye told reporters that the police fired in self-defense, while several witnesses said that the people never attacked the police.

The population is complaining about the multiple deadly attacks committed by the police using weapons purchased by their various taxes. They demand justice.
