Rwandan Journalist Killed in Accident.

Human rights organizations and advocates for a prominent Rwandan journalist, widely recognized as an independent reporter known for covering critical stories about the government, are urging a comprehensive and unbiased inquiry into his untimely death.

According to Rwandan police, John Williams Ntwali lost his life in a motorcycle accident in Kigali, the capital, around 2:50 a.m. local time on Wednesday. The announcement of Ntwali’s death came only on Thursday afternoon 2 days after his death, leaving many in the journalism and political spheres, especially those critical of the Rwandan government’s human rights record, deeply shocked. Some individuals expressed skepticism and are demanding an impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, hinting at potential international involvement.

A witness journalist Bihibindi Nuhu, who met with Ntwali said that Ntwali appeared nervous. Nuhu shared that Ntwali took precautions, such as turning off his phone, emphasizing that phones could not be trusted. Ntwali expressed facing challenges but was determined to confront life. His sudden death has raised questions, with calls for those in authority to provide explanations and prevent the spread of rumors.

Lewis Mudge, the Central Africa director for Human Rights Watch, questioned the official police account of Ntwali’s death. In a statement on Twitter, Mudge emphasized Ntwali’s crucial role in reporting on human rights violations and political repression, challenging the government. Mudge highlighted the need for a prompt and effective investigation, involving international expertise, to ascertain whether Ntwali’s death was a result of foul play.

Ntwali, who had a 20-year journalism career, faced detention or summons by the Rwanda Police Criminal Investigation Department multiple times for questioning regarding articles or publications on his media platforms. He leaves behind a wife and one child.
